The Good News
It was after a routine cleaning by the dental hygienist that my dentist performed her exam. After doing so she said that I have two small lesions on my back gums, with one on each side of my mouth. She suggested that I see my oral surgeon on the same day for him to evaluate this condition.
On the same day! I took that to mean that she was quite concerned. I asked her if that was the case, but she said no; but I knew better. I followed her original reaction and arranged to see the oral surgeon right away.
I know my oral surgeon well, having seen him several times for a range of issues. I did not have an appointment, but he agreed to squeeze me into his schedule.
As I drove to his office the unavoidable thought crossed my mind that I may have a serious problem. However, I did not find that notion to be upsetting. I saw it as one more challenge in a long series of trials that had already come my way. I am also attuned to how many people face difficulties that are far greater than mine.
Surprisingly, I got to see the oral surgeon without having to wait long. He is a pleasant man, with a reassuring manner. He took a close look inside my mouth and explained that the “lesions” were of no concern. He said that the marks noticed by the dentist are unremarkable.
The oral surgeon and I then engaged in some light chatter, and then I was on my way. As soon as I left his office, I was elated. The good news lifted my spirits more than I expected. When I reflected on that feeling, I was struck by how I must have been ready for the worst. But instead, I was told that everything was OK.
That got me thinking of our physical death. In the same way that I had some trepidation about having to see the oral surgeon, we all have some trepidation about death. We all must face our final hour, and you can imagine how elated we will be when we pass to the next stage and are told by God; our ultimate doctor, that we have nothing to fear, and there is no reason to worry.
It brings me great joy to know that my deceased parents and in-laws have already been rewarded with this news. The amount of relief and elation they feel makes me very happy.
